马来西亚华人都很厉害的
初来墨尔本的时候，跟外国人交谈后，有些人会说：Oh,you speak good English!
跟有些香港人说广东话，他们会一脸惊讶的说：哗，你啲广东话好劲哦...
跟台湾人/中国人说中文，他们就说：你中文说得好好哦...为什么会这样?
刚开始在这里生活的时候听到这种评语会觉得很奇怪。后来越来越多人对我说类似的话，我才知道说原来大家都认为马来西亚人应该是只说马来话的。
最近有一位老同学来探望我，她对我说，由于中国人的英语不好，所以外国教授都会觉得所有黄皮肤的人英文都很烂。就连她被分组做Presentation的时候教授就认为她的组可能会做得不好，还特地跑来关心...我同学英文好得很，听到教授这样对她说，她都快被气死了!但是，我们两个都不了解为什么有些中国人，香港人听到我们马来西亚人说普通话/广东话的时候会有一副见到鬼的样子。
以前我某个老师在外国念书的时候，外国人都认为马来西亚人都住树上的，结果我的老师就回答他们说：对啊，我们住树上，而且都搭电梯上树的。
我会说普通话，广东话，英文，马来话，和一点点的福建话，潮州话，兴化话...很厉害吗?还好吧...其实每一个马来西亚都差不多这样。

呃...其實從前開始到現在,我每次遇到外國人都會說我其實都是住在樹上和山洞裡,交通工具是雞公車..我不知道原來我幫馬來西亞打的廣告那麼深入人心...
hahaha, u shud see their faces when i told them i know 8 " languages"... and the classic face of theirs when they know english is actually my 3rd language...
the oni thing to be proud of as malaysian CHINESE.. =P
i only know 4 :(
seems like 80% of the malaysians can understand hokien.. excluding me..

I don't know Hokkien although my first language was suppose to be Hokkien!
I sometimes get pissed off with lecturers that think our english is bad. I.e. next sem all international first yr design students would be force to join only two classes for one of our compulsory subject.
I think it's major discrimination. However, if you put it in another way, it's doing most the international students good as we would be having online discussions and most international students [no matter what level their english is] would be over-shadowed by the locals as they are more vocal in nature.
Lots of Chinese citizens from huge cities have better command in english compared to the hong kongers. The fact that there isn't any need for hk-ers to learn english, and no chance for them to use the language isn't helping much.
From my knowledge, lots of citizens in diff European countries even Russia knows at least 2 languages. 3 is normal and some even goes to the extend for 4-6.
It just happen that we have the chance to learn both chinese and english which is really important respectively.
Just be glad that we are brought up that way. Althogh my command in all languages are just moderate, I'm proud of what I know.

Erin,yes,i think it's a discrimination to us when the lecturer/tutors thinks that we have bad command in English!!

LOL.. 8 is i count cantonese la, hokkien n teochew la.... ( again! the good thing abt being a chinese! hahahahaha~~!) then the real languages r 5 ba... =P
